Our Kids - Meet Myfanwy
Think about your daily routine. Now imagine adding an inhaler, more than 25 pills, three 20-minute physiotherapy sessions and inhaling a salt solution twice a day. This is every day life for Myfanwy, 11, as she tries to manage her cystic fibrosis (CF).
Myfanwy, Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
One month after her birth, Myfanwy was scheduled for a surgery at SickKids to determine why her stomach was so distended. After a salt sweat test, doctors confirmed Myfanwy had CF. She was introduced to her full disciplinary team, who still treat her today.
Cystic Fibrosis affects multiple organ systems, including the lungs and the digestive system. Thick mucus in the lungs makes clearing bacteria very difficult and leads to repeated cases of infection and inflammation.
Myfanwy visits SickKids every six weeks for her checkups. Here she is asked numerous questions about her day-to-day lung function, takes part in pulmonary lung function tests and spit tests.
Myfanwy refuses to allow her condition to control her life. She participates in sports and even made it to the qualifying rounds for track and field finals at school last year. In 2008, she challenged herself and started running each evening. Recently she achieved her personal best - two kilometres in 12 minutes.
