President's Office - Biography
Michael O'Mahoney accepted the challenge to lead SickKids Foundation in October 2003, bringing to the role a level of business and organizational acumen honed by years of successful fundraising for many high-profile organizations.
Michael O'Mahoney, President
Before joining the Foundation, he was Chief Advancement Officer of the National Academies, a private, non-profit institution that advises the United States government on scientific and technical matters. Based in Washington, D.C., the National Academies include the National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and National Research Council. Mike was responsible for the planning and implementation of the Academies' first fundraising campaign which raised $300 million in just over six years.
Prior to joining the National Academies, Mike was Senior Vice-President, Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he led all fundraising activities for Allegheny University of the Health Sciences and the 17 hospitals in the Allegheny University Hospital System. He has also served in leadership fundraising positions at Northwestern University Medical School (Chicago, Illinois) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York). He is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
At SickKids, Mike is leading an organization that supports the outstanding patient care, research and education at SickKids and which also invests in paediatric research across Canada.
Mike and his wife Anne have two children, Katie and Sean. Sean was born 2½ months premature and it was three months before he could be brought home. It was in part the agonizing experience of watching his infant fighting for life that inspired Mike's passion for the health and welfare of children.
His vision is for Canada to be the healthiest place in the world for children to grow up and SickKids, as a trusted innovator in children's health, is the engine for making this happen.
