When the Foundation was established in 1972, the founding trustees recognized the Foundation could help children across Canada, and build upon the leadership of the Hospital for Sick Children. In the last four decades, more than $70 million in funding has been granted across Canada for children's health through the National Grants program.

By providing funding across Canada, we hope to strengthen Canada's capacity and knowledge to respond to children's health needs. Funding is granted in priority areas of children's health based on scientific excellence and relevant impact on children's health.

A focus of our funding is ensuring there continues to be well-trained researchers across the country working to address the most pressing childhood diseases and conditions. To support young researchers early in their careers, we offer New Investigator Grants and provide support to the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Training Program.

A second focus of our funding is to help ensure that families are able to access the most up to date information about their children's health. Community Conference Grants bring together families with researchers and clinicians for medical presentations and family-oriented discussions.

Our Children's Health Agenda Grants support pan-Canadian groups who are working towards an integrated and cohesive approach to child health in Canada. Our support is going to groups like C17, the research network of all childhood cancer treatment centres in Canada. We also provide funding to the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres, an organization working to effect system-wide change in the delivery of health services to children and youth across Canada.

Our national grants are about more than what we fund. The program is about the experts who work with us to ensure our funding will make a difference for Canadian children. From across Canada, children's health leaders volunteer their time for the National Grants program as members of our Grants Advisory Committee and grant review committees. It is through their efforts that we ensure the work and people funded are of the highest calibre, and with the potential to have the greatest impact - because our children in Canada deserve no less.
