Our Kids - Meet Jack
Seven-year-old Jack was diagnosed in March 2002 with neuroblastoma. It is a rare and deadly form of cancer that arises from the adrenal glands, above the kidneys, and often spreads to other organs.
Jack, Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma accounts for nearly 10 per cent of all childhood cancers and usually occurs in children under five.
Children with this type of cancer are usually diagnosed in a later stage of the disease, and the treatment is aggressive. Jack has undergone six rounds of chemotherapy, 12 rounds of radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. He has also had three major surgeries, including the removal of his right kidney where a large tumour was located. Jack is now in remission and recently got a clean bill of health.
Jack suffered hearing loss due to the radiation he received and wears hearing aids on both ears. He also has a mild form of cerebral palsy and wears braces on his legs. He likes to mismatch his braces and his hearing aids.
Jack has had a long struggle, but is fighting this cancer with the support of his family at home and his second family here at the hospital.
