Our Kids - Meet Katherine

When Katherine was a baby her parents noticed that she had difficulty hearing. They would stand behind her and clap but she would show no reaction. They took her for a hearing test at their local hospital and, after reviewing the results, Katherine was referred to The Hospital for Sick Children.

Katherine, Hearing Loss

Upon her arrival at SickKids, specialists in paediatric hearing-loss confirmed she had limited hearing. They concluded that a cochlear implant would be her best option. Soon after, Katherine underwent surgery to insert the device. A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic apparatus that provides a sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf.

Today, Katherine is doing remarkably well. She is able to hear and communicate with her family and friends. To give back to a hospital that helped her so much, she set up a lemonade stand and donated all of the proceeds to SickKids.

Your donations enhance the research conducted at SickKids that help children like Katherine. Currently, researchers are studying the effects of double cochlear implants in patients and Katherine is on the waiting list for a second implant. Gifts like yours have helped SickKids become the largest paediatric cochlear implantation centre in North America.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Thousands of children like Katherine need your support.
