Donations = Discoveries

Child with book

You cannot put a price tag on saving the lives of children, but you can put a price on the cost of health research.

Donations provide the base funding for the SickKids Research Institute. In 2008/09, it provided $35 million to the Research Institute, supporting 24 per cent of its $143 million budget. The Foundation is the largest single revenue contributor to the Research Institute.

Paediatric health research has a proven track record of turning donations into discoveries, which improves the understanding and treatment of children’s diseases.

  • Research on the contributing causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) has led to changes resulting in a 40 per cent reduction in SIDS.
  • Today, three-quarters of the Canadian children stricken with cancer—the second leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 14—are cured. That’s a significant increase from five per cent just 40 years ago.
  • Fifty years ago, a child diagnosed with cystic fibrosis might survive to age four. Today, the median age for survival is 35 years old.

Private donations make all the difference to ensure SickKids remains a world leader.
